Learn how to strategically place your opt-in link for the best results across web, email, and social platforms.
Choosing where to place links for your freebie involves a bit of strategy, but honestly it’s all about putting your link in places where it’s easy for people to find, click, and arrive at your gorgeous landing page.
I’ve come across far too many entrepreneurs that leave me hunting for the link to the freebie they mentioned in their social media post.
Let’s not make the same mistake as those who came before us - we will be generous with the placement of our opt-in links! These are the top 3 places I recommend and will break down even further in this blog post:
No matter what your marketing strategy and sales funnel looks like, you must have links to your opt-in sprinkled all over your website!
Here’s a special tip just for you: set your link to open in a new tab. This way, your website visitors won’t lose their place on your website. After they fill out the form on your landing page, they will easily be able to go back and finish reading the blog article, browsing your home page, etc.
Here are a few key places I want you to make sure to place the link to your lead generation landing page on your website...
If this is your only opt-in, or it is the main opt-in that is driving your sales funnel, I highly recommend placing a specialized button in your navigation bar that links to your landing page.
This button should ideally be styled as a button, rather than a link. Styling it as a button will make it stand out among all of the other links in your navigation bar, and hopefully grab people’s attention.
Note: this type of button in a navigation bar is reserved for your main call-to-action (CTA). If you happen to have a different main CTA that you’d prefer to use in that spot, go ahead!
Take me as an example. My top priority is booking clients. I want it to be crazy-easy for anyone who is interested in having me design their website to reach out and contact me. I choose to reserve the navigation bar CTA for my contact button for this reason.
A next (very obvious) spot to link to your landing page is on your home page. Sure, you could drop it anywhere on there, but I suggest creating a specialized section right on your home page that showcases your freebie.
Ideally, this section is placed near the top of your home page so it is seen right off the bat when someone visits. If the flow and strategy of your home page forces your opt-in placement to be lower on the home page, that’s ok too! That just wouldn’t be my top choice.
If you have a blog, adding a link to your lead magnet into every relevant blog post is another great way to make sure your audience sees it.
You can either simply link it to text if you naturally mention it throughout your blog post, or you could create a specialized form or clickable graphic that lives within the post.
I created a form for my freebie on Kit that I embed with a code block right into my blog posts (I use the Charlotte template for this type of form)! I prefer to place the form at the end of the blog post, but if it is more relevant to place it elsewhere within the post, more power to ya!
If you have more than one lead magnet, or you provide a whole page of resources, this is another easy place to link your freebie.
I would style this page in a way that showcases each of your resources in an organized, yet eye-catching way.
One last (but not least) place to be sure to link your freebie is in your footer. A lot of website visitors may scroll right to the footer if they are looking for specific links or information. Alternatively, if someone reads your whole page, the footer is the last thing they’ll see. Place that freebie link in that cute lil footer to entice them one more time before they leave.
Social media is absolutely an important place to link your freebie - especially if social media is a huge part of your overall marketing strategy!
If you don’t link your freebie in your social media bios, what are you even doing??
Ok, sorry to be so harsh. Maybe you don’t know you’re supposed to do that!
In all honesty, I have come across many entrepreneurs and course creators who neglect linking their lead magnet in their bio. In these cases, they typically have another link taking up the spot.
Here’s your solution: create a link-in-bio page that holds alllll of your most important links. I know, it’s not revolutionary, but I felt the need to cover this.
If you have a kick-ass website designer, they likely already made you a page like this. AND they knew to style your freebie button differently than all of the other buttons to make it stand out the most.
If you don’t have a kick-ass website designer, please consider this my formal audition 😉
In all seriousness, there are plenty of paid and free platforms online where you can set up a link-in-bio page if needed.
Have you heard people on social media say something like “Comment ‘Hair Care’ for a list of my favorite products”? And then you receive a message from them with a link?
They’re using what is called an Auto DM feature. They signed up for a subscription service that automatically sends direct messages to people after they comment a specific trigger-word.
There are a few different companies available that provide this service if you think it fits your marketing style.
Don’t forget about sharing your opt-in in your emails - this might be the spot that your warmest leads take action.
If this is your first lead generation tool, then it is likely that your audience will join your email list through this freebie.
If this is not your first freebie, then it might make sense to mention it in your marketing emails every once in a while when relevant.
You can also provide a link to your opt-in in your email signature. I suggest not making this very flashy because it’s possible that your signature might have a lot of other information already packed into it!
Now that you know all of the hottest spots to link your freebie, go crazy with linking! Stay tuned for the next blog post where I’ll discuss some ideas for marketing your freebie.
